# Add a List question to a single player microsimulation

## Everything you need to know about asking participants for a list, and seeing their answers, as an admin or microsimulation owner.

A List question lets participants answer with a set of rows instead of a single answer. Use it when the answer is naturally a list, such as critical processes, key applications, dependencies, people and their roles, or the steps in a recovery plan. You no longer need one question screen for every item.

Answers come back as structured rows, in the order participants gave them, rather than as free text.

### Add a List screen

1. Open your single player microsimulation in the builder.
2. Add a screen, or select an existing one, and choose **List** as the page template. You may need to scroll the template list to find it.
3. Write the question. The question carries the instruction, so a List screen has no separate description field.
4. Name your columns (see below).
5. Choose whether the order of rows is part of the answer (see below).

### Set up the columns

A List screen can have up to six columns. Past that, participants are filling in a spreadsheet rather than answering a question.

- Select **+** at the end of the column headings to add a column.
- Rename a column by editing its heading. Renaming a heading doesn’t detach answers that have already been collected.
- Reorder columns by dragging a heading sideways, or by selecting its grip and pressing the left or right arrow key.
- Delete a column with its delete control.

The column headings are what participants see above each field, and they also appear in the heading row of the reports. Every heading needs a name before you can save or publish.

### Decide whether order matters

Turn on **Learner sets the order** when the sequence is part of the answer, for example the steps of a recovery plan or a ranked list of priorities.

- **On:** participants can reorder their rows, and the order is stored and reported with the answer.
- **Off:** rows stay in the order they were entered, and participants can’t reorder them.

Order is recorded, not marked. There is no correct order to score against, and a List question has no correct answer at all.

### What participants see

- The screen opens with three blank rows.
- Participants add as many rows as their answer needs with **+ Add**. Pressing Tab in the last field of the last row also starts the next row and moves them into it, which helps with long lists.
- They can remove a row at any time, except the last remaining one.
- When order matters, they can drag a row by its handle or use the up and down controls on the row.
- They can paste a block of cells straight from a spreadsheet into any field. The list grows to fit, and the columns fill from left to right starting at the field they pasted into.
- A row count shows below the list, named after the first column, for example “5 critical processes”.

![](https://help.iluminr.io/hubfs/kb-images/oct-2026/list-learner-filled.png) If AI feedback is switched on for the microsimulation, participants also receive feedback on their list after submitting. It looks at the rows they entered, for example a row with a missing value, or something a list of this kind would normally include.

### See the answers

- **Activity tab:** each participant’s list shows as a small table, with their rows in the order they gave them. Distribution charts don’t apply to free-text rows, so none is shown for a List question.
- **Reports and exports:** the rows are included as a table, not as a single block of text. In the data export, each list row is its own row of the file.

If you rename a column after responses exist, answers that have already been collected keep their original headings.

### Limits to know about

- A List screen can’t be a decision point, because there is no fixed set of answers to branch on.
- A list has no set number of starting rows and no maximum row setting.
- A List question isn’t scored. Feedback is qualitative.
