# Get to know the Report Builder

## Everything you need to know about finding, starting and templating reports for multiplayer sessions in the Report Builder, as an admin.

The Report Builder lets you turn a session's results into a report. You pick the sections, add your own writing, choose a look, and export to PDF or Word. You can build several reports from one session, for example a short one for a board and a longer one for your own team.

Editing a report never changes the underlying results.

The Report Builder is available for multiplayer microsimulations. Support for single player microsimulations is coming soon.

*Building a report on the Reports tab of a multiplayer session*

### Find your reports

1. Select **Microsimulations**, then **Deployments**.
2. Open a deployment.
3. On the **Microsimulations** page, select a session.
4. Select the **Reports** tab. The other tabs are **Overview** and **Activity**.

*The Reports tab listing all reports for a session*

The list shows each report's name, template type, owner, last modified date and status. Use the **Status**, **Template** and **Archived** filters at the top to narrow it. Archived reports are hidden by default.

Select a report to open it. Select **All reports** to come back to the list.

### Start a new report

Select **+ Report**, then choose a template.

*The New report dialog with template choices*

- **Full Post-Exercise Report** includes every data section available for the session.
- **Blank** starts empty so you add only the sections you want.

Your account may offer further templates. Each one shows how many sections it starts with.

### Save a report as a template

Once a draft report has the sections you want, select **Save as template** in the toolbar, between **Preview** and **Publish**.

In the **Save as a template** dialog:

1. Enter a **Name**, for example Executive readout.
2. Optionally add a **Description** that says when someone should use this template.
3. Select **Save template**.

![The Save as a template dialog](https://help.iluminr.io/hubfs/kb-images/oct-2026/report-save-template.jpg)

*The Save as a template dialog*

The template keeps your section choices, their order, your headings and custom text, and your report settings. It never keeps any exercise data. Reports built from it pull fresh data from the microsimulation.

Saved templates appear in the **New report** list after the built-in ones, newest first, with who saved each. They are shared across your organisation and work on any microsimulation. If a template has sections that don't apply to a microsimulation, those sections are left out and the list shows a notice.

Only the person who saved a template can rename it, change its description or delete it. Deleting is permanent. Reports already built from it aren't affected.

You can't edit a template's sections directly. To change a layout, build it in a report and save a new template.

### What the editor looks like

![A report open in the editor, showing the contents list, cover page and toolbar](https://help.iluminr.io/hubfs/kb-images/oct-2026/reports-editor.jpg)

*A report open in the editor, showing the contents list, cover page and toolbar*

- **Contents** on the left lists the report's sections. Select one to jump to it.
- The cover page shows your logo, the report title, the deployment name, the exercise date and the number of participants. A label such as **Internal use only** sits in the top-right corner.
- Between sections, an **Add section** button lets you insert another one.
- The toolbar has **Settings**, **Preview**, **Save as template**, **Publish** and an export menu.

### What goes in a report

Sections come from the session's results. They are grouped as Overview (session details), Participation (participation summary and attendance roster), Intelligence (insights and recommended actions) and Activity. You can also add your own custom sections.

See [**How do I build a report from microsim data?**](https://help.iluminr.io/knowledge/build-a-report?hsLang=en) for the steps.

### When new results come in

If new results arrive after you build a report, for example when more participants finish, the report shows which sections are out of date. Select **Update report with latest results** to refresh those sections in one step.

### Report status

Each report shows a status in the list, such as **Draft** or **Published**.
