# Publish and version a single player microsimulation

## Everything you need to know about how versions work in the single player builder, and what publishing does to your deployments, as an admin or microsimulation owner.

Every time you publish a single player microsimulation, it becomes a new version. The builder shows you which version is live, whether you have changes that aren’t published yet, and what publishing will do before you commit to it.

Use this to edit a live microsimulation with confidence. Your edits stay private until you publish them.

### Check which version is live

Look at the status line at the top right of the builder, under the **Publish** button.

| You see | It means |
| --- | --- |
| **Draft** and when it was saved | You haven’t published this microsimulation yet. |
| **● v1.0 live** and when it was saved | v1.0 is live and you have no unpublished changes. |
| **● v1.0 live**, **Unpublished changes** and when it was saved | You have edits that aren’t published yet. |

Your work saves automatically as you go.

### Minor and major updates

When you have unpublished changes, the builder works out whether they make a minor or a major update. A major update shows a **Major** label next to **Unpublished changes**, and the Publish button shows the next version number, for example **Publish v2.0**.

| | What counts | What happens to deployments |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Minor update** (for example v1.0 to v1.1) | Changes to wording, media, settings and screen order. | Existing deployments can update, and participants keep their progress. |
| **Major update** (for example v1.1 to v2.0) | Adding or removing screens or questions, or changing question types, choices, correct answers, objectives or logic. | New deployments get the new version. A deployment can only update before anyone has responded, so deployments that already have responses stay on the version they started with. |

### See what will change

Select **Unpublished changes** to see a summary of your edits before you publish. It groups them under Screens, Answers, Questions, Media and Details, and marks the groups that make the update major. Select **+N more** on a row to see all of its changes.

![](https://help.iluminr.io/hubfs/kb-images/oct-2026/version-unpublished-changes.png) ## Publish a version

1. Select **Publish**. The button shows the version number it will create, for example **Publish v1.1**.
2. Review the summary. It tells you which version new deployments get, and what happens to existing ones.
3. Select **Publish v1.1** to confirm.

![](https://help.iluminr.io/hubfs/kb-images/oct-2026/version-publish-dialog.png) When it’s done, you’ll see “v1.1 is published”. Deployments still running the previous version now show **Update available**, if the update is minor. Deployments on an older version with responses stay on that version after a major update.

If the button reads **Fix screens** with a number, some screens have issues that stop a publish. Select it to see the list and jump to each screen. Once they’re fixed, it returns to **Publish**.

The first time you publish, the version is v1.0. New deployments get v1.0, and any edits you make afterwards stay unpublished until you publish again.

### Discard your changes

Changed your mind? Open **Unpublished changes** and select **Discard**. The microsimulation goes back to the version that is live now, and the dialog lists what you will lose. You can’t undo a discard.

### See previous versions

Open the **⋯** menu and select **Version history**. The panel lists every version with its type (minor or major), the date it was published and who published it, and shows your unpublished changes at the top. Version history is available once you have published for the first time.

You can look at past versions, but you can’t restore or compare them.
