Understanding Impact Assessment scoring

Understand how the Impact Assessment tool scores Escalation levels

The Impact Assessment tool in iluminr is designed to provide a structured and configurable approach to assessing critical events. By understanding how scoring works and how it interacts with your configuration (impact categories, severity levels, and escalation bands), Admin Users can ensure assessments trigger the right escalation pathways and drive informed, timely responses.

The cumulative score derived from all assessed impact areas will dictate the corresponding escalation level, as outlined in the "escalation levels" within the Impact Assessment settings.

Understanding the Scoring Methodology

The scoring system always calculates from a total of 100 points. These 100 points are evenly split across the number of impact categories you define.

Within each category, users assign a severity rating. Each rating level contributes a portion of the category’s points to the overall score.

Impact Assessment Scoring Formula:

  • Total Score = 100
  • Points per Category = 100 / number of categories
  • Points per Severity Level = (Points per category) / (number of severity levels)

This ensures scoring remains standardised regardless of how many categories or levels you choose to configure.

Best Practices for Admins

By tailoring your Impact Assessment configuration and understanding how the scoring works, you’ll enable faster, more accurate decision-making across your team.

  • Test Your Escalation Bands: Use realistic scenarios and run them through Microsimulations to ensure scoring pushes events to the correct escalation level.
  • Keep Configuration Balanced: Avoid having too many or too few categories unless justified; each dilutes or intensifies the scoring weight.
  • Document Assumptions: Ensure stakeholders understand the logic behind scoring to maintain alignment.
  • Regular Reviews: As your organisation evolves, periodically review your categories, levels, and escalation bands.

Configuration Examples

Below are several examples, demonstrating the configuration customisation available:

  • Example 1: 4 Categories, 5 Severity Levels, 3 Escalation Levels
  • Example 2: 10 Categories, 5 Severity Levels, 3 Escalation Levels
  • Example 3: 8 Categories, 4 Severity Levels. 3 Escalation Levels
  • Example 4: 5 Categories, 4 Severity Levels, 4 Escalation Levels

Example 1: 4 Categories, 5 Severity Levels, 3 Escalation Levels

Each category contributes 25 points (100 ÷ 4). Each severity level increases in 5-point increments (25 ÷ 5).

Categories:

  1. People

  2. Assets

  3. Finance

  4. Reputation

Severity Levels:

  • No Impact (0)

  • Low (5)

  • Moderate (10)

  • High (15)

  • Severe (20)

  • Catastrophic (25)

Escalation Levels:

  • Watch and Wait: 0–30

  • Stay Alert: 31–60

  • Declare Crisis: 61–100

Scenario:

  • People: Moderate = 10

  • Assets: Low = 5

  • Finance: Severe = 25

  • Reputation: No Impact = 0

Total Score = 10 + 5 + 25 + 0 = 40 → Stay Alert

Example 2: 10 Categories, 5 Severity Levels, 3 Escalation Levels

Each category contributes 10 points (100 ÷ 10). Each severity level adds 2 points (10 ÷ 5).

Categories:

  1. People

  2. Operations

  3. Finance

  4. IT Systems

  5. Legal & Compliance

  6. Reputation

  7. Supply Chain

  8. Facilities

  9. Health & Safety

  10. Communications

Severity Levels:

  • No Impact (0)

  • Low (2)

  • Moderate (4)

  • High (6)

  • Severe (8)

  • Catastrophic (10)

Escalation Levels:

  • Watch and Wait: 0–30

  • Stay Alert: 31–60

  • Declare Crisis: 61–100

Scenario:

  • People: High = 6

  • Operations: Moderate = 4

  • Finance: Severe = 8

  • IT Systems: Moderate = 4

  • Legal & Compliance: Low = 2

  • Reputation: Low = 2

  • Supply Chain: High = 6

  • Facilities: No Impact = 0

  • Health & Safety: Moderate = 4

  • Communications: Low = 2

Total Score = 38 → Stay Alert

Example 3: 8 Categories, 4 Severity Levels. 3 Escalation Levels

Each category contributes 12.5 points (100 ÷ 8). Each step adds approximately 4.17 points (12.5 ÷ 3).

Categories:

  1. People

  2. Technology

  3. Legal

  4. Finance

  5. Reputation

  6. Operations

  7. Assets

  8. Supply Chain

Severity Levels:

  • No Impact (0)

  • Low (~4.17)

  • Moderate (~8.34)

  • High (~12.5)

Escalation Levels:

  • Watch and Wait: 0–30

  • Stay Alert: 31–60

  • Declare Crisis: 61–100

Scenario:

  • People: High = 12.5

  • Technology: Moderate = 8.34

  • Legal: Low = 4.17

  • Finance: Moderate = 8.34

  • Reputation: No Impact = 0

  • Operations: Moderate = 8.34

  • Assets: Low = 4.17

  • Supply Chain: High = 12.5

Total Score = ~58.36 → Stay Alert

Example 4: 5 Categories, 4 Severity Levels, 4 Escalation Levels

In this example, there are 5 categories and 4 severity levels. Each category contributes 20 points (100 ÷ 5), and each level contributes approximately 6.67 points (20 ÷ 3) per step beyond 'No Impact'.

Categories:

  • People

  • Technology

  • Operations

  • Finance

  • Reputation

Severity Levels:

  • No Impact (0)

  • Low (~6.67)

  • Moderate (~13.34)

  • High (~20)

Escalation Levels:

  • Standdown: 0–20

  • Watch and Wait: 21–40

  • Stay Alert: 41–70

  • Declare Crisis: 71–100

Scenario:

  • People: Moderate = 13.34

  • Technology: Low = 6.67

  • Operations: High = 20

  • Finance: Low = 6.67

  • Reputation: No Impact = 0
